Owning Winnipeg by Adrian Gorea

Opening Reception: November 25, 8 - 10 PM
Artist in attendance

Adrian Gorea, originally from Romania, age 27, is presenting numerous duplications of his own drawings, which he has been collecting since he was very little. The horizontal presentation of his drawings not only fits the narrow space of the gallery, but it was a necessity to complete his documentation project called "Owninig Winnipeg." He somehow claims that he owns various parts of Winnipeg by his act of documentation. What has he done? Find it out in Semai Gallery.

Artist Statement

This project is the fruit of my need to possess the place I live in. I have put together the film of my art history. It shows a lot about who I am as an artist and is also a piece of my past. The film is a symbol of my time, which is both repetitive (i.e. each frame represents a unit of time) and changing (i.e. each frame consists of a different image). I use this film to appropriate the place I live in. I believe both my need to own Winnipeg and my reaction to it are instinctual. I consider this project a work in progress and I intend to continue it in other places I might live in.
