Artist Statement

I made the original version of POWER TO THE ARTIST to serve as a personal reminder to maintain my artist's perspective in every avenue of my practice: the direction of the othergallery, the organization of the collage party, and my visual art.

Lately, we've seen a movement of artists taking control of how their work is represented, exhibited, and circulated - wearing multiple hats at the same time. More artists are curating, publishing, directing commercial galleries and artist run centres. We're taking art outside traditional spaces in an effort to connect with a larger audience and break down esoteric barriers. It is in this spirit that I want to celebrate my community, and bring in 2007 with new agency and autonomous state of mind. Let's all continue to challenge current models and build new structures to voice and share ideas with each other.

Artist Biography

Paul Butler (b. 1973) has a varied practice that includes exhibiting his own work, (most recently at White Columns, NYC); hosting a touring experimental studio, the Collage Party; and directing the nomadic commercial othergallery.com. He has facilitated Collage Parties all over North America and Europe including Berlin, London, Toronto, Los Angeles, and New York. Recently, he founded theuppertradingpost.com - a non-profit ARC providing an alternative economy for artist trading.
